Gone Postal!

Matthew Koomen’s 1969 VW Fridolin started as a faithful factory restoration, but as the build progressed, things quickly got out of hand.

Originally made for the German and Swiss postal service, the VW Type 147 “Kleinlieferwagen” (small delivery van) was a weird mashup of Type 3, Karmann Ghia, Kombi, and Beetle. Most were worked into the ground and scrapped. Matthew rescued this one and made it his own.

What began as a German postal van is now a full custom masterpiece that blows people’s minds. Built on an IRS chassis and powered by a 2L engine, it features 17" BRM wheels, custom interior, flawless paint, and detail work that has to be seen to be believed. It’s one of maybe two Fridolins in Australia, with fewer than 150 known to exist worldwide. If you’re into rare Volkswagens, air-cooled customs, or just love stories of obsessive craftsmanship, this one’s for you.
