The Other 356

I didn’t know much about the Porsche Continental before meeting Greg.

To me it looked like a beautiful early 356 with an unusual badge on the side. But once Greg started explaining the story behind the Continental name, I knew there was a film in it.

In 1955, Porsche used the Continental name for the American market, reportedly at the suggestion of US importer Max Hoffman. It only lasted a short time after Ford objected to Porsche using a name already associated with Lincoln.

Greg’s car spent much of its life in Washington before eventually finding its way to Australia. It’s not a perfect concours car either. It has a later engine, it’s been converted to 12 volt and, most importantly, Greg actually drives it.

That ended up being one of my favourite things about the story.

We got up early and spent a morning following Greg around Sydney’s Northern Beaches in the car. That’s what we liked most about Greg, he drives his cars.
